Morakniv Coastal

Floating knife

Bachelor thesis   |   2016

Summary | In this project I utilised a full range of skills to develop Morakniv Coastal, a floating knife designed for Scandinavian pisciculture. Extensive user research was conducted in order to understand demands, requirements and behaviours. Prototyping from sketches through clay models, renderings and 3D printed models enabled validating the solution against existing products, towards users and the manufacturing team to make sure the solution was suitable.

User research

In order to fully understand users emotional and practical need a variety of methods were used. Interviews and field studies gained knowledge on limitations, challenges and requirements in the working environment. Intel from non-expert users were also gathered to broaden ideas and understand other potential markets.

Sketches

Concept development

Insights gained through analysis with affinity diagram was used as base for ideation. Using various creative methods, both sketching and physical mockup exploration derived a great variety of ideas. These were thoroughly evaluated against both user requirements and the clients requirements and limitations. The best suited concept were brought to a final phase of refining design and functionality.

Final design

All elements of the knife were developed to make it as light as possible along with maintaining physical quality and efficiency for the user. A redesigned blade allows for maximum air volume within the knife but still keeps is strong and durable. A biodegradable back plug end will sink the knife after too long exposure in the water to not make any harm to marine life or humans if it is lost. An entire new holder for the knife enables the user to grab the knife in a faster and more ergonomic way.
